This Black lacquer bangle begins with an ox-horn base, shaped into a slim and balanced form. Once the foundation is complete, the piece enters the slower world of China lacquerware, where each layer of natural China lacquer is applied, dried, and polished by hand. The surface develops gradually—becoming smooth, deep, and quietly reflective.

As the layers build, the bracelet starts to reveal its two-color form. Red and black lacquer are added in alternating coats, preparing the piece for the traditional danian technique.

The Essence of Danian — Color, Line, and Control

The danian process is the heart of this bangle. Its purpose is simple but demanding: to keep the colors true and the lines continuous, without wrinkles, cracks, or collapsed areas.

To achieve this, the artisan twists and polishes the lacquer layers with precise control. Every movement must be steady. Every angle must be correct. Even a slight change in pressure can affect the final pattern.

Because of this difficulty, danian is taught through a strict master–apprentice system. It requires not only technical skill but a deep understanding of lacquer behavior, color layering, and material response. For this reason, the technique is considered a form of lacquerware art, a refined expression of traditional Yangzhou lacquerware craft.
