Black Lacquer Bangle with Opal Inlay
Black Lacquer Bangle with Opal Inlay
A bangle shaped slowly, with light held inside.
This black lacquer bangle begins with a simple circle of padauk wood. An artisan shapes it by hand, preparing it for layers of Chinese lacquer that will transform the surface into something deeper and quieter.
Each layer cures, is polished, and then coated again. Over many days, the bangle gains its dark shine—subtle, not loud—the kind of finish that has defined Yangzhou lacquerware for centuries.
When the surface is ready, the artisan twists blue pigments across a small section of the bangle. The motion is gentle but intentional, creating a gradient that shifts from deep blue to pale light. A single opal piece is then set into the pattern. Its color moves with every tilt of the wrist, adding a quiet spark without overpowering the simplicity of the design.
No two lacquer bangles share the same pattern. The opal, the brush lines, the depth of the blue—all shaped by the moment they were made.
